Awhile ago another photographer in my awesome little community reached out to me and asked me to photograph her family before they have to say goodbye to their sweet little dog, Burly. I am always so honored when I get to photograph other photographers & even more so when they ask me to do it for such an important reason. As a Denver lifestyle family photographer, this kind of thing is the reason why photography is so meaningful to me.
I have had several sessions this year surrounding animals and what they mean to their people & when Tamara asked me to photograph her family I knew doing an in-home/neighborhood session would be perfect. They have a beautiful home in Denver with a front porch that only deepens my love for front porches (why is this not a more popular thing in Colorado?!) & then we went for a quick stroll around their neighborhood. While their kiddo, Delaney was pretty disappointed that their favorite sweet treat Liks Ice Cream wasn’t open (let’s be real, I was disappointed too), I was delighted with their cute neighborhood & willingness to go for a quick adventure.
The night before our session Tamara text me letting me know that Burly had gone missing. Trotted himself right down the road & found a family that took him in for the evening. Thankfully they took him into a shelter the next day and they were able to find him! He was re-united with his family which somehow just made this session even more important!
I loved spending time with this sweet family & I really hope that they have a few more years with their dog. Saying goodbye to our fur babies is one of the hardest things in the world & as someone who has a 14 year old black lab I am so empathetic to that loneliness that is left behind when we have to say goodbye to them. I highly encourage incorporating your fur babies into your sessions so you have those memories, too. They are important.
