A Black Tie Affair

Over my years I’ve been lucky enough to photograph weddings at really beautiful venues but the Surf Hotel in Buena Vista Colorado is one of my top locations that I adore. I am delighted to be on the preferred vendor list for such an impeccable venue. I have photographed many weddings at this beautiful mountain location but Steven & James put on a party of a lifetime with decor that really made a statement. They leaned into the beautiful colors of a Colorado fall and their florist Wandering Poppy Co created one of the most beautiful ceremony spaces I’ve ever had the pleasure of photographing. The draping of the fabric along the trees, the florals everywhere, the giant beautiful arch that they said their vows in front of… Even the leaves leading down the aisle. Everything was perfect and romantic and intimate. What a delight to be a Surf Hotel wedding photographer!

Steven & James were very intentional about their wedding day. Their planner, Jennifer with Hitched AF, ensured that every single moment went as smoothly as possible and the entire day felt like a dream. They took time together in the morning to prepare for the chaos of the day. They included their dogs in their ceremony & I think we all know that anywhere that dogs exist is my happy space. Always such a bonus. I love that the Surf Hotel is dog friendly too! They had a welcome party the night before and a drag queen brunch the day after. They really ensured their guests had an incredible time while also making sure they had plenty of time with each other and with everyone else!

Their wedding officiant, Candace Woods of Woods and the Wild, is such a thoughtful and inspiring speaker. She always has something deeply profound to share and she started this ceremony by honoring all of those who have fought for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. A stark reminder of that battles already fought, and the battles we are all still fighting.

As someone who has photographed and witnessed love for over 15 years now I like to think that I’ve seen a lot of incredible relationships in front of my lens and James and Steven… gosh. Their love is immense. The way they look at each other has a beautiful spark of magic that is brilliant and spectacular. And the love they have for and from their community of loved ones shows up in big ways. I feel honored and so lucky to have been there on this day. I find that love like this will always be spiritual and healing. Cheers to Steven and James!
